Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients. Plaquenil is a DMARD which has been prescribed for years to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. When the first biologic DMARD received FDA-approval in 1998, and as other biologics followed in subsequent years, it appeared as though Plaquenil would become less prescribed. Steroid drugs include prednisone and Solu-Medrol methylprednisolone. Steroids are used to control rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, but they do not alter the course of the disease in the same way.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

What Conditions Does This Treat? Originally, hydroxychloroquine was used to prevent and treat malaria and was considered very effective. Now it is generally used for rheumatoid arthritis, but it has also been shown to work well for juvenile arthritis, some lupus symptoms, and other types of autoimmune conditions. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis or juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. It is not clear why hydroxychloroquine is effective at treating autoimmune diseases. Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs DMARDs are effective at reducing inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis RA and slowing or preventing damage to joints. This enables a person with RA to maintain function and quality of life. These drugs are called “disease-modifying” because.
