    Hydroxychloroquine for osteoarthritis

I know I had never heard of it until my rheumatologist said that is what I have...along w/osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. My blood tests are negative for RF but my CRP test was above normal. Ai Yi Yi Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells (these are messengers for your immune system, if you will) from interacting with your T-Cells (a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation when an infection is found, and these basically malfunction with inflammatory disorders). So, he started me on 400 mg of Plaquenil a day and he just upped it to 600 mg a day. As I said previously, my Rheumatologist now says it is inflammatory osteoarthrits. Why am I taking Plaquenil, which does help tremedously BTW, if I don't have RA or Lupus. This "dendritic deactivation" (I made that phrase up) helps reduce your immune system being silly and inflaming your joints.

In a second recently reported study, researchers from the Chicago area documented that roughly half of the 554 rheumatology patients on hydroxychloroquine HCQ in a regional health system and seen by an ophthalmologist during 2009-2016 received an excessive dosage of the drug Ophthalmology. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is considered an older DMARD disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD typically used for the treatment of various rheumatic and dermatologic diseases. Three studies of HCQ in OA, including one abstract and one letter, are available and use a wide variety of outcome measures in small patient populations.

Some studies have suggested that low levels of inflammation cause symptoms in osteoarthritis. Hydroxychloroquine is an established treatment for inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. It is sometimes used off label for hand osteoarthritis, but very few data exist on its effectiveness. Hydroxychloroquine in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis OA is a debilitating condition that accounts for one of the most common causes of disability among adults.1 This disease leads to lost productivity via chronic disability and affects nearly ΒΌ of adults over age 18, and 68% of adults over age 65.2 In addition to the Hydroxychloroquine is used in routine practice for treating synovitis in inflammatory arthritides, such as rheumatoid arthritis. We propose that treating patients with symptomatic hand OA with hydroxychloroquine will be a practical and safe treatment to reduce synovitis and pain.
